One of the most effective ways to prepare for your up-coming birth is to feed your body nutritious fuel. When we’re in the 3rd trimester, our bodies are gearing up for labor and expending A LOT of energy to make sure our babies are ready for life outside of our bodies. This means the consuming collagen, protein, fat, minerals, vitamins and lots of liquids are ESSENTIAL. Luckily, we have just the answer – bone broth. Not only does this feed our bodies and our babies, but it actually provides energy we and our babies need to get through labor.
During your birth, you may get to a point where you’ve had interventions that require you to be on a clear liquid diet. Fortunately, bone broth is considered a “clear liquid”, and THIS is going to be your best friend to provide the energy and stamina you need to birth your baby.
If you’re wondering what should be in your snack bag, make sure this is on your list. I make sure my clients whip up a batch in the weeks leading up to their due date, and keep it in their freezer until they go into labor. Almost ALL of my clients bring a small cooler to the hospital filled with bone broth. Needless to say, this broth recipe is a MUST HAVE for your birth. Plus, it’s good for your taste buds too.
Easy Recipe for your Labor Rocket Fuel
- Start saving your bones whenever you bake a chicken, eat a steak, or consume anything with bones. You can keep them in a gallon freezer bag when you’re ready.
- You can also start saving your unused veggie scraps, like the ends of carrots, the ends of onions, garlic skins, mushrooms (really any veggie scraps_ in a freezer bag for future broth-making days.
- Fill a stock pot with your bone and veggie scraps, and add a pinch of spices like thyme, rosemary and sage, salt and pepper, and cover with water. (I like to add a pinch of Astragalus root for extra immune support). Cook on a low simmer for 2-6 hours.
- Strain your broth through a colander once cooled.
- When you’ve strained your broth, add two bunches of cilantro. If you’re one of those folks who thinks cilantro tastes like soap, adding a bunch of kale (de-stalked) is a good alternative. Be careful about adding parsley – it can actually inhibit milk production if you consume too much of it.
- Throw it all in a blender on high until it looks frothy and bright green. Add 1 tsp of vinegar to help with the uptake of minerals from your greens.
- Jar it up and freeze!
